Advent of the Apostles
Tonight’s taraweeh consists of Juz 23.
The Sûrahs covered are nos 36-39: most of Yâsîn, As-Sâffât (Those Ranging in Ranks), Sâd and the first half of Az-Zumar (the Crowds).
Ayah/Verse ‘anchors’ are given in italics along with their number.
The 3 Apostles
This Sûrah opens with the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w being addressed concerning the Revelation that he brought.
The Qur’ân is from Allah s.w.t, ‘full of wisdom’ for those who follow the Straight Path.
To the disbelievers, ‘it matters not whether you warn them or not: they will not believe.’ Only those who follow Allah’s Message and fear Him Unseen will gain Guidance.
13. Wadrib lahum mathalan – Present to them a parable…
The Parable of the People of the City is given. When Allah s.w.t sent two Apostles to them, the people rejected them.
So Allah sent a third Apostle to strengthen the two others; but the people rejected them with the usual excuses.
The Apostles replied, ‘Our duty is only to announce the clear Message.’
The people accused the Apostles of bringing ill-luck on them and threatened to punish them.
Then, a man from the farthest end of the city came to them running and implored them to ‘obey the Apostles.’
The city rejected the message of Allah and was destroyed.
The man was a true Believer and when he was granted Paradise, he said, ‘I wish my people could know how my Lord has forgiven and honoured me.’
33. Wa ayatu lahumul ard – And a sign for them is the earth..
Look at Allah’s Signs around you. They all bear witness to Allah.
See how the earth dies and is revived, the abundance of food and water, the creation of all life in pairs.
Watch the sun and the moon following their orbits by Allah’s Law and the ships that sail gracefully on the waters for man’s use.
60. Alam a’had ilaykum – Did I not enjoin upon you…?
On the Last Day, the guilty ones will be reprimanded and reminded of their origins,
‘ Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam that you not worship Satan…even ‘their hands will speak …and their feet bear witness’ to their evil deeds.
83. Fa subhanal ladhi – ‘Exalted is He…’
…In whose Hand is the realm of all things, and to Him you will be returned.
Sûrah As-Sâffât (Those Ranging in Ranks)
Peace upon the Messengers
Allah first swears by the angels, including the saffat, those lined up in rows, that He is One. Throughout the heavens and the earth, the conflict between good and evil has continued.
Allah has ‘decked the lower heaven to guard against all stubborn, rebellious evil spirits.’
13. Wa idha dhukkiru – And when they are reminded…
On the earth Allah’s Revelations and Messengers confronted evil.
Evil and good will finally be sorted out on the Day of Judgement when Good will conquer Evil.
41. Ulaaika lahum rizqun – They will be provided with….
The believers will be provided with everything delicious in gardens of pleasure.
And one of them will say that he had an associate on earth who would challenge the idea of resurrection.
He will see this disbeliever in the midst of hellfire and will say,’ By Allah you almost ruined me, if not for the favour of my Lord, I would have been brought (to hell).’
75. Wa laqad nadana Nooh – And Noah had called upon Us…
Peace was invoked on the Messengers, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Aaron, Elias & Lot (peace be upon them all) for their work in their conflict with Evil.
Jonah had given up on his people and got cast into the belly of a giant fish.
When he glorified Allah from within, he was rescued.
Later, he preached to more than 100,00 people who then accepted the Truth.
The Prophet Kings
17. Wadhkur abduna dawud – And remember our servant, David…
Here earthly power is contrasted with spiritual power, to show how much more important and real spiritual power is.
For this reason Dâwûd and Solomon are taken as examples to prove this point, because both were Kings and Prophets.
David was a strong man and a powerful king, but he always praised Allah. So Allah ‘strengthened his kingdom, gave him wisdom & sound Judgement in speech and decision.’
Solomon had control over jinns and animals as well. One time he became so preoccupied with a display of a racehorses that he forgot the remembrance of Allah.
He became extremely remorseful after this. He would seek Allah’s forgiveness and was rewarded with a great kingdom and nearness to Allah.
41. Wadhkur abduna Ayyub – And remember our servant Job…
Job Ayyûb chose to be patient while he suffered, Allah therefore rewarded him.
Had he been impatient and complained to Allah bitterly, Allah would have been displeased with him.
All the Messengers chose the path of final bliss rather than final misery.
71. Idh qala rabbuka lil malaikati – Mention when your Lord said to the angels…
Âdam’s story is retold to prove that the devil is our enemy. Evil arose from pride and rebellion but it can never harm Allah’s true servants.
Sûrah Az-Zumar (The Crowds)
The Effects of Revelation
Allah mentions the wondrous signs of creation. And then he prods our logic, ‘Is one who is devoutly obedient during the night…fearing the Hereafter and hoping for Allah’s Mercy (like one who is not?)
23.Allah nazzala ahsanal hadeeth – Allah has sen down the best statement…
‘The skins shiver of those who fear their Lord; then their skins and hearts relax at the mention of Allah.
That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills.’
‘Whoever prays at night in Ramadan out of faith and the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.’ (Hadeeth) May Allah accept our Taraweeh tonight.
